Rejoice, for Oppo Hunt approaches!
I’m going to make a formal gameplay post to go up either late this week or early next week, but I just wanted to get a few FAQs out there.
1. After spending a bit more time trying to find a better platform I have to officially announce that, yes, the game will be on Instagram.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
2. Start date: The list of checkpoints will go up in Oppo on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 4 (exact time to be announced later). This is to give people a few days to research locations and plan before the weekend, though if you’re able to bang out a few checkpoints on a weekday then more power to you.
3. End date: August 24.
4. Format: At the start time I will post a list of items that are odd enough to be interesting, but can still be found in pretty much every state. For example, it could be something like “highway sign with ‘69' on it (nice),” or “artillery gun that’s been turned into a monument/memorial,” or “dinosaur statue.” You will have to find an example of the item out in the wild, photograph it with your mascot/token item in the photo (as demonstrated in the top image by my dinoroar), and post the photo to the gram. You will only be able to score one example of each hunt item. So, for example, if you stumble upon an entire dinosaur sculpture garden you can’t go and log every dino in the joint. Scoring will be maintained via google spreadsheet (if a couple people want to volunteer to hep maintain the sheet I won’t say no).
And now, a task for Oppo. I have amassed a decent sized list of checkpoints. I’m happy with my list, but at the same time I’m sure there’s some excellent ideas I haven’t thought of. So I’m opening the floor to Oppo to offer submissions. Give me any idea you have, the only rule being it has to be something that can be found in virtually any state. I want to see what the hive mind can come up with before I finalize my list.

A “biggest ____” tourist attraction

I wanted to suggest the Sinclair dinosaur, but it looks like the stations are missing from most of the southeast. Of course you can order dinosaurs online...

I think we should broaden the dinosaur to just animal statues in general

I don’t really use my instagram for anything atm , and with a lot of people still posting BLM and movement stuff, I don’t feel right cluttering up other people’s feeds with pictures. Too soon you know?
I’ve never done one of these, though I seriously want to. Would be quite an adventure. Are there ways to do this more privately? Like if I created a private account just for this (and then end up making a post about my Oppo Hunt adventure when I finish it right here on Oppositelock), would that work out?

I think we could add a car-spotting category, i.e. “something mid-engined” , “made before the Vietnam war”, or "chicken tax victim"

I won’t be participating, but some ideas...
Boulder in a parking lot (bonus points if your car is stuck on it)
Telephone booth (in any state of disrepair)
A genuine service station (doesn’t still have to be open)
Burnt-out traffic light (logistical challenge to get it into a selfie)
Break over angle warning sign

You’re more than welcome to create an Instagram account specifically for the rally. Several teams have done that in the past.

I was just giving examples. It's entirely possible none of the examples I used will be part of the actual game

Hmm let’s see....
Street name with tie to tv show (Evergreen for the Simpsons, Mockingbird for Munsters etc with a caveat that it be an uncommon name)
Waterfalls
Historical markers, maybe with categories for famous place, person, or event being recognized
Maybe a bonus challenge where points are given for DOTS based on decade the vehicle spotted is from With the decade changing occasionally
Museums dedicated to uncommon things; it’s too far away for a day trip but my state has a pencil sharpener museum as an example
Pictures taken at the city limit sign of cities with strange names or that have multiple “home of.....” signs for famous people born there
Covered bridges; I don’t know how common they are in western states though
Old farm boundary markers

This is what I’ll be doing (making an account for this specifically which will go dark at the end)

This is my plan. I have enough creepy messages on Insta as it is, I don’t need anyone here figuring out who I really am

A concrete plant
A r acetrack (in service)
A r acetrack (abandoned/shut down) (no tre spassing, stay outside)
A phallic building
Two (or more) of the same make/model/color/year (approx) cars parked adjacent to each other in a parking lot
An Oppo sticker on a car not your own
A covered bridge
—-
I will post more if I think of them. Looking forward to this!

Antique theater Marquis
Wacky water tower
Public train track level crossing without an electric arm
One lane bridge
Most license plates/more than x plates in one photo not on cars.
Din osaur statues are fine but maybe add an animal statue category.
National park sign
Abandoned cars by decade not in a junkyard
Obs cure museums
Family owned hardware store
Super niche store that has a tiny customer base but somehow stays in business

Something like an old school house or log cabin. Or building over 100 years old.
A duck.
And possibly as an Bonus. Oldest grave marker.
Sounds interesting.

Abandoned cars that fell down mountains, canyons or otherwise went over the edge.
Cars with trees growing out them.
Random objects neatly stacked in unexpected places.

Hey is there going to be an Oppo Rally this year? I participated in the Connecticut rally in 2018 and it was awesome!

Unfortunately no. I’d been working on the plans for one but then the virus hit so I had to put it on hold until next year

Makes sense. I’m in for next year!

On my Insta I have the follow setting to “request to follow” even a middle age dad like me gets a fair share of creepy follow requests and messages. It’s the world we live in I guess.
